Had the same problem with my original Microsoft Explorer Mouse.

The problem is in either the USB part of the wire, or the wiring itself.

In my case, it was the USB part that was faulty, which ended up disconnecting frequently.

kidding. Happened to my fucking IME1.1 mouse, shit took like 8 years of gaming abuse, it's definitly the wiring, I tried soldering it but it was only a temporary fix.

It shorted today. I ripped the wire and then smashed the Mouse with a hammer. Couple of days I will get another mouse, now Im using a temproary mouse, however.

Finally got a new mouse! and its a USB, so If I hope that the last one didnt leave much of its wiring in there...

i had the same problem happen to my old microsoft mouse. i called the phone number on the bottom of the mouse and they mailed me a new one for free when i told them the serial number. pretty sweet.
